Here is a list of common plants and herbs that are very good for removing and preventing negative energy:

After your house cleansing, fill some pretty dishes with these protective herbs and place them on tables or shelves in the main parts of your home. (Caution: Some herbs are toxic so be sure to keep them out of reach of children and animals.) These herbs should be replaced every few months. Don't toss the old herbs in the trash - rather, sprinkle them outside to return them to nature so they can be recycled. You can also make pretty herbal sachets or "charm bags" to hang on doors or tuck in a drawer. Place one in your car for protection while traveling. Sprinkle protective herbs on the tops of doorways, or at the thresholds of your home. If you do decide to perform a clearing and protecting of your property to remove and repel negativity from the grounds all together, you will continue after smudging and clearing the inside right on out into your yard from the entrance of your home and smudge your entire yard, walking around your property starting in next to your home, moving in a deosil direction, with each pass getting wider and wider away from your home to the edge of your property. Once you have done this, take a large container of sea salt (these can be purchased at just about any craft store in the soap making isle for about $10.) Still moving in a deosil direction, starting at the entrance to your property, start sprinkling the salt around the perimeter of your property, creating a salt circle. This does not have to be a solid, thick line of salt, just sprinkle the salt liberally as you walk, surrounding your property. In all honesty it's more about the intent of creating the barrier. Once you have made a complete pass around the perimeter of your property and have come back to where you started connecting the end with the beginning, then you will take red brick dust (the best kind is the kind you make yourself, with your own sweat and intent in it. However, it can be purchased or even collected at brick companies etc.) Repeat the process you did with the salt with the brick dust. This is one of the most powerful barriers you can possibly ever create to keep out negative entities and is part of the Voodoo / Hoodoo traditions. Once this has been done around the entire perimeter of your property, then take up dried Chamomile and cast a circle of it right around your house, close up to the walls of your home, moving in a deosil direction, starting at the front door and ending at the front door completing the circle. If you have a great deal of negativity in your space you may also sprinkle powdered Cayenne Pepper inside your home right after smudging the inside of your home, but I would keep this close to the walls inside. Do not use Cayenne Pepper on the floors if you have small children or pets, as the Cayenne can cause them harm should they touch it. Keeping it close to the walls will hopefully keep you from stepping in it also.

Burning certain incense can achieve the same effect as herbs which is similar to smudging.
